African Music, published by the International Library of African Music (ILAM), Rhodes University, South Africa, is back in print with volume 8, number 1, 2007. The journal has been on hiatus since volume 7, number 4 (1999). The journal is published annually and includes a full length compact disc compilation of field recordings.
African Music was established by ILAM's founder Hugh Tracey in 1954 as a way to disseminate African music scholarship. It is now being re-launched as a peer-reviewed publication, but its purpose remains the same. Volume 8, number 1 (2007) is only available in print form but the journal has plans to go online. Future Music Magazine (ISSN 1553-6777) published by Future Network, has ceased with the January 2007 issue. The magazine, which covered the recording industry and electronic instruments, had a short tenure; its first volume was May/June 2005.
The journal Musiktheorie (ISSN 0177-4182), published by Laaber-Verlag, has expanded its title to Musiktheorie: Zeitschrift fur Musikwissenschaft beginning with volume 21, number 1 (2006). The new subtitle was added to underline that music theory is "a broadly formulated, historically oriented music science" (author's translation).
