Radical Musicology is peer-reviewed and was established to "provide a forum for progressive thinking across the whole field of musical studies." Although the journal does not advocate a particular theoretical viewpoint or ideology, it was created in response to a perceived marginalization of the 'new' or 'critical' musicologies of the 1990s. The editorial board does indeed read as an international "Who's Who" of the 'new musicology' including names such as Philip V. Bohlman, University of Chicago and Susan McClary, University of California, Los Angeles (AMS list post by Ian Biddle, 16 September 2006: Radical Musicology: New Journal announcement and call for submissions).
