George Habash, founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), one of the most radical and violent terrorist groups ever, died on January 26, at the age of 82. PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas, the supposedly moderate president of the Palestinian Authority and recipient of billions of dollars in aid from the United States and the European Union, eulogized Habash as an "historic leader," declared a three-day mourning period, and ordered flags be flown at half staff in Habash's honor. The PFLP was a major branch of the Arafat-dominated PLO, and Yasser Arafat and George Habash alternated between rivalry and alliance with each other throughout their lives.
