Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced on January 11 that states that have begun the process of making their driver's licenses "Real D-compliant" by May will be able to apply for a waiver that will give them until May 2011 to develop a licensing system that meets federal requirements. Under the extended regulations, beginning in 2014, anyone born after December 1, 1964 who wants to board an airplane or enter a federal building or nuclear power plant would have to present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license. States will have until 2017 to bring those born before December 1, 1964 under the new regulations. President ...
