PEOPLE REMEMBER ME FOR BEING the first graduate of the Royals Baseball Academy to make it to the majors.
The academy was Mr. Kauffman's (former Royals owner Ewing Kauffman) idea. They took guys who had the raw athletic ability to play baseball. The academy was supposed to be for guys who had limited baseball experience, but most of us had played in high school.
I think Mr. Kauffman wanted to take someone who had no baseball experience and make a major leaguer out of him. We had one guy who was a weightlifter, and he went as high as Class A.
