SEOUL, March 3 Asia Pulse - Developing an efficient sales network is the key to farming sector growth as the country opens its market to imports, South Korea's new agriculture and fisheries minister said Friday.
In a inaugural speech, Chung Woon-chun said top priority will be given to building an agricultural and food product "expressway" that will allow high-quality farm and fishery goods to reach consumers quickly at minimum cost.
Such a system is seen as a way to cope with the expected influx of cheap imports that take weeks and months to reach consumers. A lengthy transportation process affects product freshness and quality that are becoming important in consumer selection.
The former head of the Korea Agriculture CEO Association also said farming households, with the help of regional and central governments, should build companies that can help take responsibility for marketing local produce and food.
He said the government is willing to help in establishing interest groups or organizations that can support farmers in their efforts to grow specific types of fruits, vegetables and grain.
