ATLANTA -- Depression was more common in patients with asthma than in the general population, based on the results of a study of 439 adults with asthma.
Depression was most common among asthma patients who smoked, had two or more comorbid conditions, or had more severe asthma. It was also more common among women and patients who were younger than 45 years. Based on these findings, screening for depression should be considered for patients with asthma, especially those with risk factors, Dr. Patricia P. Katz said while presenting a poster at the 98th International Conference of the American Thoracic Society.
