MIAMI BEACH - Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis results in a low rate of recurrence and persistence, preserves fertility, and significantly improves quality of life, Dr. Ken Sinervo reported at the annual meeting of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
The optimal treatment method for endometriosis remains controversial, and prior studies present similar outcomes for ablation and excision procedures.
Data from an ongoing 11-year study show favorable long-term outcomes for patients treated with laparoscopic excision, said Dr. Sinervo, who is in private practice in Atlanta.
The study is following 826 consecutive patients treated for endometriosis with laparoscopic excision using a [CO.sub.2] laser. Outcome measures include short- and long-term complications, symptom recurrence, repeat surgeries, endometriosis recurrence, and quality of life, he said.
