ST. LOUIS -- Hysterectomy, be it abdominal or vaginal, presents a fine opportunity for prophylaxis against vaginal eversion, Dr. G. Rodney Meeks said at the 12th International Pelvic Reconstructive and Vaginal Surgery Conference.
"I think when we do hysterectomies we ought to assess the pelvic floor, even if we're not doing a pelvic floor operation, and see if there are some things we can do that might indeed help prevent prolapse," said Dr. Meeks, professor of ob.gyn. and director of gynecology at the University of Mississippi, Jackson.
It's useful during both abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy to identify and if necessary repair or reattach the uterosacral ligaments.
