SAN ANTONIO -- Nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction is an important new option in women with early-stage breast cancer and in high-risk patients who want prophylactic mastectomy, Dr. Joseph P. Crowe said.
Cosmetic results rival those obtained with breast-conserving therapy, he noted at a breast cancer symposium sponsored by the San Antonio Cancer Institute.
"I haven't seen anything this exciting in 20 years of practice as a breast surgeon. The results are consistently cosmetically excellent. The procedure is definitely worth the extra effort involved. Patients really like the result," said Dr. Crowe, who developed the procedure.
Standard mastectomy practice includes resection of the nipple-areolar complex. But with careful preoperative planning aimed at preserving the skin envelope, the complex can be preserved.
