A few weeks ago I happened to acquire a copy of Carleton Coon's 1965 book The Living Races of Man. What a gem! Coon was an anthropologist--was in fact Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. His book is a world-wide survey of human types, with a thorough classification into races and sub-races, buttressed by a wealth of physiometric, linguistic, and archeological data. The real fascination of the book, though, lies in the illustrations at the end: One-hundred-twenty-eight black-and-white photographs of human beings from every part of our planet.
