Illustrated in fantastical, whimsical cartoon style, this children's book may have a more poignant message for adults. Originally published in French, Piano Piano centers on Marcolino, a young boy with a familiar message for his mother: he doesn't like playing or practicing the piano. His mother responds by telling him that after he was born she no longer had time to practice and if he wants to become a "grand pianist," he needs to practice. Through his grandfather's keen perception and empathetic relationship with his grandson, Marcolino is allowed to choose a new instrument that he would enjoy practicing--not the expected electric guitar or saxophone--but the tuba. This he practices with relish!
Davide Cali is a prolific children's author and illustrator, but his portrait of piano practice is not the most positive. Cali cleverly writes and illustrates the story from Marcolino's viewpoint--to him, piano practice consists solely of scales, and his frustration with practicing involves banging his fists on the keyboard and shouting.
