I will start my discussion of J. K. Holman's compilation of "Wagner moments" by relating one of my own: As a very young lad ... I couldn't have been more than 9 or 10 ... the Community Concert Association of the small town in which I lived brought the Detroit Symphony to give an all-Wagner program featuring the esteemed soprano Frances Yeend. When Yeend made her first appearance to sing "Dich teure Halle" from Tannhauser, she was making her way on stage all bedecked in midnight blue velvet when suddenly she stumbled and almost fell because the heel on one of her shoes had broken off. Making no attempt at trying to hide what had happened, she kicked off both shoes, and proceeded to her spot next to the conductor to sing her aria barefoot. That is my "Wagner moment."

Now, it's clear that this story has very little to do with Wagner. It has everything to do with the imperturbable diva of the evening. The concert could just as easily have been all Mozart or all Verdi, and the effect that Yeend's broken heel had on me that has stayed in my memory now for more than 50 years would have been the same.
