During the last congressional elections in 2006, the Republican Party lost majority control of both houses of Congress largely because the American people have become increasingly upset with our continued involvement in Iraq and associate the pro-Iraq War position with the Republican Party. Yet the GOP presidential candidates, with the notable exception of Ron Paul, not only cling to the pro-Iraq War position but recently made clear they don't think our going to war against Iraq was a mistake in the first place, despite the fact that the rationale for the war, the reputed weapons of mass destruction, were never found.
