The rector of Iceland's Reykjavik University is leading the way in making higher education more equitable for women.

Since joining the college a year ago, Svafa Gronfeldt has introduced equal pay for both genders, providing a balance of women and men on her board and breaking down academic silos to provide a more inter-disciplinary approach.

The gender mix reaps intellectual, economic and cultural rewards, according to Gronfeldt. "We have created this fabulous dynamic culture. It has been voted the best place to work in Iceland twice over the last five years," she said. This year, an independent survey found that 95% of employees reported being happy in their jobs.

Having women in senior jobs on campus has become the norm in Iceland, resulting in a system that is less stuffy.
