Students tend to become more spiritual but less religious during their first three years of college, according to a national survey done by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at the University of California Los Angeles.
Students showed "enormous growth" on indicators of spiritual development from freshman to junior year. In the 2004 survey of freshmen, 42% said integrating spirituality into their lives is very important or essential, whereas the same was true for 50% of juniors in 2007.
