After ten years, Melissa Jennings is finally getting what she sought: an apology from her ex-coach for inappropriate team discussions of a sexual nature and a change in the school's sexual harassment policy.
The former student-athlete had sued University of North Carolina and its star soccer coach, Anson Dorrance, for creating a hostile environment in violation of Title IX in 1998.
Jennings claimed that Dorrance made crude remarks about players' sex lives and weight, legs and chests. Jennings met with UNC's senior counsel in 1996 to discuss her concerns and was told only to talk things over with Dorrance.
Dorrance cut Jennings from the team in 1998 and she filed suit that same year. Another female student settled her harassment suit with the university for $70,000 in 2004, but Jennings held out for Dorrance's admission. Jennings' case has been through the judicial system, with her next trial set to begin in April 2008. Both the university and Dorrance had vigorously fought her charges.
The settlement included:
* A $385,000 payment to Jennings to include legal fees
* A letter from Dorrance admitting that he had "participated with members of the UNC-Chapel Hill soccer team in group discussions of those team members' sexual activities ...
