Sweet Inspiration

What's the difference between a model and a muse? One serves a purpose; the other, an ideal. Here's a look at the women who inspired great artists -- with more than just a pretty face. -- LIANA SCHAFFNER

Nine goddesses who embody the arts and inspire creativity become known as the Muses. Their name in Greek, mousa, is said to be derived from the Indo-European root word for "men" and "think."

Eight-year-old Beatrice Portinari captures

the heart of Dante Alighieri. The poet later dedicates La Vita Nuova and La Divina Commedia to her, and proclaims, "The end of my love was indeed the greeting of this lady."

Lord Byron is so taken by the vision of his cousin, Lady Anne Wilmot, that he completes "She Walks in Beauty" the next day.
