We extended the luxury theme of this issue by including a one-on-one showdown of the top-of-the-line, flagship models from Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. Both received major redesigns for 2007 and are the most popular models in their class.
Overall, the Lexus LS proved to be the better car, achieving a test score of 99 out of 100 points, which is the highest score of any car we've recently tested. Both models provide the highest levels of comfort, quietness, roominess, and luxury features. The LS, however, delivers notably better fuel economy--21 mpg vs. 17--and easy, more intuitive controls.
The Mercedes-Benz S550 had more agile handling, better steering feel, and a slight edge in ride comfort and acceleration. But its complicated controls can be frustrating.
According to our latest Annual Auto Reliability Survey, the Lexus LS has shown consistently high reliability; the Mercedes-Benz S-Class continues to be below average.
MORE ROOM, FANCIER FEATURES
What more do you get for an extra $20,000 to $30,000 over the price of the other sedans in this issue? (Our Lexus LS 460L cost $76,572; the Mercedes S550 cost $90,200.) The short answer is more room and ride comfort, effortless V8 acceleration, and additional features.
Both cars are longer than the other models in this issue, stretching to more than 200 inches. This translates into notably more cabin space, especially in the cavernous rear seats.
