Foreign Tire Sales of New Jersey has issued a recall of 255,000 steel-belted light-truck radial tires imported into the U.S. under the brand names Compass, Westlake, and YKS.
The defective tires may lack a component called a gum strip or they may contain gum strips that are not large enough. The strips help to protect against the tread or belt separating from the tire, a condition that could cause a driver to lose control of the vehicle and crash.
According to the company, the recalled tires meet federal motor vehicle safety standards, but when tested independently the tires did not meet the company standards, which it says are more rigorous.
