When you review spam-filtering software ("Best Security Software," September 2007), it always disappoints me that you do not address one of the most effective approaches to stopping spam: challenge and response. This system sends a "challenge" to senders' addresses that are not listed in the user's e-mail address book or on a special list composed by the user. Senders who want to reach the user must complete a brief form to say why they are writing. Since almost all spam is computer generated, there is no one to answer the challenge, so the spam is never sent through to the addressee. This type of software is very flexible, allowing the user to establish all sorts of rules that will allow targeted e-mail of a particular nature to get through.
