National Institute on Drug Abuse investigators believe their recent research in rats will lead to progress toward developing a drug to treat cannabis addiction in humans. According to NIDA's Steven Goldberg, roughly 10 percent of individuals who experiment with marijuana develop some measure of addiction to its active compound--tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)--and would benefit from a pharmacological treatment.
