On December 3, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released its latest National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), entitled Iran: Nuclear Intentions and Capabilities. The report was a stunning blow to the Bush administration's ongoing bid to paint Iran as a dangerous aggressive nation bent on developing and ultimately using nuclear weapons.
The key finding in the latest NIE is that Iran ended its efforts to develop a nuclear weapon several years ago. The report notes: "We judge with high confidence that in fall 2003, Tehran halted its nuclear weapons program" Moreover, the report states with "moderate confidence" that "Tehran had not restarted its nuclear weapons program as of mid-2007."
