The case of Nada Nadim Prouty and her sisters, which has been quickly swept under the rug by government officials and the media, demonstrates the terrible toll to our national security from our broken borders and woeful lack of security screening for our intelligence and law-enforcement agencies.
Prouty pleaded guilty in federal court on November 13 to conspiracy to defraud the United States, unauthorized computer access, and naturalization fraud. The big question that begs to be asked is: "Why was she not charged with far more serious charges related to spying, treason, and terrorism?" Under a plea agreement worked out by federal prosecutors, she faces only six to 12 months in prison, and perhaps a few months to a couple years of supervised release. She may also be stripped of her U.S. citizenship and deported to her native Lebanon.
Prouty, now age 37, came to the United States in 1989 on a one-year student visa as Nada Nadim El-Aouar. After the visa expired, she stayed on illegally in the Detroit area. To avoid deportation, she paid an unemployed U.S. citizen to marry her. Typical of many sham marriages, the couple did not live together.
