The Night Shift
You can have it both ways: A swingy, low-maintenance cut by day that transforms into a refined style for evening. By Brooke Le Poer Trench
Many of us got swept up in a romance with short hair, lopping it into refreshingly low-maintenance bobs. But now that it's holiday party season, the cut suddenly looks too crisp and businesslike for evening. "This length can seem limiting for women who have had longer hair, because none of their former evening styles work," says Garren, owner of the Garren New York salon. The answer is not bedhead or an updo. "The hair can still be worn down, but instead of a casual daytime texture, you want something a little more 'done,'" says Garren, who promises that a little manipulation is all it takes to give short hair an elegant upgrade. To prove his point, Garren created three evening looks that dress up the same cut -- with three very different conclusions. "What they have in common is a looseness," he says. "They are polished, but also soft and sexy." The result is bound to rekindle the love affair.
