Delegates to the UN climate conference on the tropical Indonesian island of Bali reached an agreement on a "road map" for replacing the failed and expiring Kyoto Accord with a new agreement by 2009--but not before the lead UN official at the conference erupted into tears.
As the conference began to draw to a close after 12 days, Yvo de Boer, the Dutch official serving as lead negotiator for the UN, began to address the delegates, warning that global warming could "plunge the world into a conflict." Apparently overcome by the prospect, the delicate de Boer burst into tears and had to be led away by colleagues, while surprised and shocked delegates looked on. "He wasn't just wiping his eyes, he was in floods of tears," one observer said, according to London's Daily Mail.
