The presidential campaign of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) raised a record-setting $6 million on December 16. A report in USA Today noted that this will practically guarantee that Paul will "outraise his rivals for the Republican nomination in the fourth quarter and likely will be able to fund a presence in many of the states that vote Feb. 5."

The old record for fundraising in a single day was $5.7 million that John Kerry raised during his presidential campaign in 2004. Paul campaign spokesman Jesse Benton said that the latest contributions brought the campaign's fundraising tally since October 1 to $18 million, 50 percent more than its goal of $12 million.
