Christopher Wheeldon's new ballet troupe, Morphoses, had a weeklong New York debut season at City Center last month, and before each performance Wheeldon came out in front of the curtain to thank the companies that had lent him his dancers: London's Royal Ballet (which had dispatched its brilliant star Alina Cojocaru), the Bolshoi (Anastasia Yatsenko), New York City Ballet (Wendy Whelan, Maria Kowroski, Ashley Bouder), and others. This was a gracious thank-you, and more than that. By informing the spectators that they were about to see a highly credentialled group of dancers, it provided a rousing warmup.
