On September 11, 2001, a lawyer named Glenn Winuk--who was also a volunteer fireman--helped evacuate his law offices, which were located a block and a half away from the World Trade Center. He then grabbed his medic's bag and ran toward the burning WTC South Tower.
Winuk's remains were found after the tower collapsed.
His noble sacrifice has not been forgotten by those who knew him. In fact, Glenn's brother Jay and his longtime friend, David Paine, decided to turn their personal and national tragedy into a way to encourage service to others. Starting in 2002, the two friends sent e-mails to friends and family, suggesting that they do a good deed on September 11, such as donating a day's pay to charity. As their concept grew, they founded myGoodDeed.org.
