The recent article on the misuse of speech was excellent ("Torturing the English Language," September 17). In particular, the author did a service in pointing out that "pro-choice" really means pro-abortion.

However, he did fall into a semantic trap in describing Iraq and Afghanistan as nations.

Iraq, long known as Mesopotamia, contains disparate groups of people whose mutual hostility was long held in check by the Ottoman Empire, the dismemberment of which at the end of the First World War resulted in the establishment of a number of new states, none of which were really based on nationality. Iraq was first established and held in check by a brutal British military occupation, then made a kingdom under British influence.
