ACROSS THE WORLD, major companies like L'Oreal, Avon and Unilever make

a profit off women of color who buy creams that promise to lighten their skin. The creams contain a dangerous ingredient, known as hydroquinone, which "bleaches" the skin by inhibiting melanin, the substance responsible for skin pigmentation. With repeated use, it has been known to severely damage skin and cause cancer.
