The University of Delaware is halting an effort to increase tolerance at its undergraduate student residence halls in response to criticism. In a cautionary tale for schools seeking to promote citizenship, Delaware spent years refining the residence-life education program, only to have it unravel in a few days of public criticism.
It was designed to build understanding among diverse students through a series of discussions. But the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) accused the school of creating a "systematic thought reform" social experiment that promoted certain views on sexuality, race and morality, leading to the program's abrupt suspension this fall.
