Social science PhD programs need to undergo serious change to help students succeed in the 21st century, according to a multi-disciplinary study done by the Center for Innovation and Research in Graduate Education (CIRGE) at the University of Washington.
The report, "Social Science PhDs--Five+ Years Out," surveyed 3,025 recent PhDs about their educational and job experiences. Researchers found that fewer than half of respondents had full-time jobs six months after getting their degree. It took three years for that figure to reach 75%.
"It's a myth that all those who earn a doctorate in the social sciences become professors," said Maresi Nerad, director of the center. "It's also a myth that the career path is straight and smooth." Barriers include insufficient training in teaching, writing and publishing.
