About half of all PhD candidates never finish their degrees, according to the report by the Council of Graduate Schools.

After 10 years, the majority of humanities students have still not completed their PhDs, while nearly two-thirds of engineering students are finished. After seven years, less than 30% of humanities students are done, but the majority of engineering and life science students have packed their bags.
