Looking forward to 2008
This year looks set to be an exciting one for the information industry.
It's unusual for an information management story to hit the national news headlines so in a way it has been refreshing A- albeit also deeply concerning A- to witness the unfolding of the HM Revenue & Customs data fiasco.
The ensuing revelations of ever more frightening information management lapses on the part of various government bodies only add to the sense of concern. There have sensibly been widespread calls for improvements in information policy and training, and we can expect data protection to move up the corporate agenda in 2008.
Industry commentators have rightly pointed out, though, that the human factor has an important part to play. Come up with an iron-clad control policy, and human ingenuity will be tempted to find a way round it in the interests of expediency.
