Miller Brewing Company, the second largest brewery in the United States, brewed up a major tempest when it lent its name and financial support to the Folsom Street Fair on September 30 in San Francisco. Miller came under heavy fire from Concerned Women for America, the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, Americans for Truth, and the Family Research Council when it was revealed that the Miller logo appeared on a sacrilegious poster for the fair depicting a malicious parody of Leonardo da Vinci's "Last Supper." The poster mimicked the famous painting with half-naked men in leather, sadomasochistic attire posing as Jesus Christ and the apostles behind a table laden with obscene sex paraphernalia. (Because of the offensive nature of the poster, THE NEW AMERICAN has decided not to publish a photo of it in conjunction with this story.) Miller also bought a full-page ad in the official 64-page program for the fair, which has become infamous in recent years as a public, outdoor, city-approved sex orgy.
The Milwaukee-based beer giant came under attack the week before the fair, as news of its sponsorship became known. In response, the company asked the fair organizers to remove its logo, but it would not comment on whether it would continue to financially support this fair or similar events in the future.
