The New York Times unleashed a political bombshell on October 4 when it reported that in 2005, the Justice Department issued a secret legal opinion that, "according to officials briefed on it," was "an expansive endorsement of the harshest interrogation techniques ever used" by the CIA on terror suspects. The approved techniques, said the Times, include "head-slapping, simulated drowning [waterboarding] and frigid temperatures."
