The business case for community forestry in the UK has received a fillip with The Mersey Forest, the largest of England's 12 Community Forests, recognised at the prestigious North of England Business Excellence Awards 2007.
Representatives from The Mersey Forest Team were presented with the
Brian Redhead Award for Environmental Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility by broadcaster and journalist Loyd Grossman at the award ceremony in Manchester, with judges commenting: `The Mersey Forest concept is visionary, the approach measured, the deployment effective and the results self evident'.
The Community Forest programme was launched across England in the early 1990s to regenerate economies and revitalise landscapes through increasing tree cover and engaging local communities. Now as the initiatives approach the midpoint of their 30-year Forest Plans and the young woodlands planted begin to mature, the achievements made so far are becoming ever more visible.
