Minorities earned 20% of the more than 26,000 research PhD earned by U.S. citizens in 2006, according to a recent report, "Doctorate Recipients from United States Universities: Summary Report 2006."
It showed that the number of research PhDs earned by members of minority groups rose from 5,075 in 2005 to 5,211 in 2006. African-Americans led with 1,659 PhDs.
For the 5th year in a row, U.S. women earned more PhDs than U.S. men, 51%. When including PhDs to non-U.S. citizens, women earned 45% of all doctorates. In the past decade, women have seen the greatest growth of PhDs in civil engineering, ...
