For the third time in five months, California State University at Fresno will be writing a big check to a former employee for sex discrimination in its athletics program. The most recent and biggest check is going to former women's basketball coach Stacy Johnson-Klein for $19.1 million.
Johnson-Klein was fired in 2005 after arguing for equal rights for female athletes, according to her suit. After eight weeks of testimony, the jury took less than four hours to decide that Fresno had discriminated and retaliated against Johnson-Klein. The school plans to appeal.
Johnson-Klein offered the school a chance to settle for less than $1 million a few months ago and the school counter-offered with $550,000, which she declined. "For women in general, I think, it's a victory to see that there's a justice system in America," she said. "It's long, it's hard, it's not for the weak of heart. But it works."
