"As journalists serving on the front lines, we have a responsibility to use our voice on issues of importance to our community," stated Maria Hinojosa, as she delivered the keynote for the November 6, 2007 Latino Leaders Network Luncheon[TM] in Washington, DC, a quarterly event hosted by the latino Leaders Network[TM] and founder, Mickey Ibarra, to provide a platform for prominent Latino leaders to share their personal story of obstacles overcome to achieve success.
An award-winning journalist and host of NPR's Latino USA, Maria Hinojosa also serves as senior correspondent for the Emmy Award-winning PBS newsmagazine NOW. Her career as a journalist has been a long and illustrious one, with previous stints at CNN and CBS networks as correspondent and producer for a broad range of shows. She was named by Hispanic Business Magazine one of the 100 most influential latinos in the United States for three years.
In 1995, she received the Robert F. Kennedy award for "Manhood Behind Bars," a story for NPR, which documented how jail has become a right of passage for men of all races. In 1993, she received both the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Radio Award and the New York Society of Professional Journalists Deadline Award for her NPR report, "Kids and Guns."
