Security in tatters as more data goes AWOL
Laura Smith
Public trust in the ability of government bodies to handle personal data securely was further undermined last month by more blunders involving the loss and misdirection of sensitive data.
In separate incidents, vehicle licensing staff lost the personal details of thousands of Northern Ireland drivers, while files on prisoners in Norfolk and health staff in Merseyside were mistakenly sent to private companies.
On the last day of parliament before the Christmas break, transport secretary Ruth Kelly also revealed that data on driving theory test candidates had been lost by service provider Pearson.
The chain of events that led to the loss of details of 7,685 vehicles and more than 6,000 vehicle keepers' names and addresses began with requests from vehicle manufacturers to contact drivers about faults or potential faults in certain models.
