IN THE AUTUMN of 2006 I attended a lecture in Sydney, by a Canadian speech pathologist, Phyllis Bottomer, who applied the autistic disorders spectrum to Pride and Prejudice. First we were given handouts that described the symptoms of each point along the spectrum, from low functioning (the Kanner end) to high functioning (the Asperger end).
