THAT RIDE ON THE MOORS 
 
   I last rode you twenty years ago 
   your dark flanks outrageously black 
   flying like velvet over the long wild grass 
   and the soft thudded sound of your hooves 
 
   I think of the way you cocked back your ears 
   as I pull on my hat for the mowing 
   and the lawn mower stutters out in strange language 
   my thick black boots trudging behind as my arms 
   power into the yielding grass 
 
   I think of your mane the long grace of your neck
