HANOI, Jan 1 Asia Pulse - A radiation and nuclear expert said on December 30 that the possibility for radiation exposure to people working nearby is very low after a device containing iridium was missing at an oil rig in southern Vietnam.
The device, used to check welding quality, was missing on December 28 at an oil rig in southern Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, where 400 employees were working. It was recovered and put in a warehouse after more than an hour.
Dr. Dang Thanh Luong from the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Control said that the radioactive source that was dropped at the oil rig was a closed source and that there have been various incidents related to the dropping and sticking of radioactive devices in the world but no radioactive exposure has been reported so far.
Luong further said that as the device has a radioactivity level of 26.68 curies, the level of radioactivity workers may be exposed to is only equivalent to that when they undergo a CT scan.
