BENAPOLE, Jan 1 Asia Pulse - Indian customs authorities at Petrapole land port disallowed export of 4,000 tons of rice sold to Bangladeshi traders.
Reports from Petrapole land port said Indian exporters had several meetings with customs officials to secure passage of their consignment to Benapole. They argued that they should be allowed to honour the sales commitment for which L/Cs opened well before the government raised the minimum export price to US$500 per ton effective from December 27.
But the Indian customs official would not allow export at US$425 per ton, in spite of the sales commitment made at the export price fixed by their government.
This has upset the Bangladeshi importers. Their anger compounded by the fact that they have already paid for the rice.
"Exporters will now compel the Bangladeshis to pay an additional US$75 to US$80 dollars per ton on the plea that government raised the price", said owner of Kazi Enterprise whose consignment of rice has been withheld at Petrapole.
