JAKARTA, Jan 1 Asia Pulse - The Indonesian government will lower the rice import duty from Rp550 (US$0.06cents) to Rp450 per kg to lighten the burden of the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) in stabilizing the domestic rice price, a senior minister said.
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Boediono disclosed the government's intention after a coordinative meeting on the prices of basic necessaries here Friday.
"The cut in rice import duty is meant to lighten Bulog's burden in its task of stabilizing the rice price in the domestic market," Boediono said.
Present at the meeting were Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono, Trade Minister Mari Pangestu, State Enterprises Minister Sofyan Jalil, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafi'i Jamal, Bulog Director Mustafa Abu Bakar, and the head of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Ruswman Heriawan.
Boediono said the decision to reduce rice import duty was taken on the consideration that the international rice price had increased while Bulog was tasked with stabilizing the domestic price of the staple by importing rice when necessary.
