Hailed variously as "a beautiful sheet of water," the "holy lake," and "the Queen of American Lakes," (1) Lake George was, and still is, an idealized landscape site. Located in the southern Adirondack Mountains in New York State, this thirty-two-mile-long glacial lake, rimmed by majestic mountains and gently sloping hills, and dotted with 172 islands, has attracted droves of artists to its shores and has drawn the praises of dignitaries, writers, and ordinary tourists alike.
