Ouite a few cities lay claim to being the birthplace of art nouveau. As one of them, Brussels can certainly take credit for being the midwife. The decorative arts have always flourished in Flanders, and to mark the 175th anniversary of the founding of present-day Belgium, a number of exhibitions are being held to celebrate the contributions made to this and other important artistic movements.

The major event is called Art Nouveau and Design, 1830-1958 and is being held at the Koninklijk Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis in Brussels. It provides an overview of the decorative arts in Belgium from the mid-nineteenth century until the Exposition Universelle et Internationale held in Brussels in 1958.
