Masterfully woven throughout the collections-see Nina Ricci's twisted sweaterdresses or Giles's mammoth mufflers-knitwear is one of the most ubiquitous directives of the season. This deluge of chunky cabling and fancy needlework persuaded me to try my hand at the haute hobby.
I enlisted the help of Twinkle's Wenlan Chia (of the whimsically feminine, exuberantly colored cardigan and skullcap). After sifting through a plethora of patterns (leaps and bounds beyond kitschy pom-pom-ed sweater sets) and mountains of 100 percent organic yarn, I settled on an urchin-gray tunic. Following a brief demo on "casting on," the garter, the knit and the purl stitches, I began.
